The Buffalo Hotel is 5 hrs away from Sani Top and 2 hours away from the Katse Dam Wall. If you are coming from Underberg and Sehlabathebe it makes more sense to sleep over at the Buffalo Hotel to shorten your journey. The Hotel is equipped with a comfortable Bar and Restaurant. Even if you don't overnight it is worth stopping in for lunch or some fresh filter coffee after a couple of hours behind the wheel. There is not much in terms of activities but a good place to rest and to make use of the good meals on offer. There are ensuite rondavels with single beds and other square shapped ensuite doubles and twins. If you enroute to Katse Dam you can still make it in time for the Dam wall tour which starts at 9am as well as 2pm. The hotel is on the outskirts of Thaba Tseka with a decent view and escapes the bustling settlement of Thaba Tseka. |

History: The name Oxbow comes from the shape of a mountain nearby that resembles the bow of an ox and the river nearby flows in an oxbow. The Oxbow Lodge came into being when 2 brothers were exploring the Maluti mountains and got coughed in a snow storm. As outdoor enthusiasts they came back and started the Oxbow Campsite. 1971 two young men from England got involved and built wooden houses. The ownership changed many times. In 1978 the existing owner took over the lodge. 1981 the lodge was completely destroyed by fire. Thus the name New Oxbow Lodge came into being when the owner started to rebuild the lodge. All building material was transported up 2 Nissan four-wheel drive Pick-ups. As there are no telephones, relaxation comes very easily with the sound of the flowing waterfall. |
